What Is It? The youth council exists to provide support and direction for the youth ministry programs of First Covenant Church. It is a small group that is representative of the parents and staff of the church and reflects the philosophy of youth ministry that is to grow students toward maturity in Christ.
The mission of youth ministry at First Covenant Church supports the mission set by the denomination: To reach, disciple and equip students for growth towards spiritual maturity, and to challenge them to become passionate about impacting their community and world for Christ.
The youth council fulfills the following four functions:
VISION To dream about the future of youth ministry, creating an overall picture of what the youth program should look like. To implement new ideas that will better and enrich the program. To prepare for our future in youth ministry SUPPORT To make available the resources for youth ministry (people, money and tools). To be an advocate for the program, giving public support of its goals. To promote and encourage participation in youth ministry for lay leaders and parents. To listen to and understand the needs of the families involved with youth ministry. EVALUATION To evaluate the youth programs continually, from the leaders involved to the expenditures of the budget. To understand the events that have happened and evaluate their integrity with the mission statement. To evaluate the quality of care and personal attention that every student is getting. PRAYER To consistently pray for the leaders and students who are involved in youth ministry. To pray for upcoming events and follow up of past events. To pray for God’s direction in youth ministry.

Sunday School Sunday School is a focused teaching time on Sunday mornings from 9:45 till 10:45. A combination of Bible studies and life issues are used during this time. A wide variety of media and style is used to reach to our variety of students. Class includes discussion, book study, video, guest speakers, and small groups. Sunday School is team taught by 3 teachers, giving students more points of view. The outcome of Sunday School hopes to be a furthering in students’ understanding of the Bible and who God is.
Discipleship / Confirmation Check out the DC webpage for more info D/C (Discipleship/Confirmation) is a two year program exploring the Old and New Testaments, as well as the history of the Church. It is a weekly class that meets for all seventh and eight graders on Sunday mornings, for the purpose of understanding and applying what the Word of God contains. The goal of the program is to introduce Christ to those who do not know Him, to deepen a commitment to Christ that is already made, and to prepare our students for a life of service to God.
Tuesday & Wednesday Nights Tuesday & Wednesday Nights are our main “youth group” nights. It is the time where students come to grow closer as a group and talk about spiritual issues in a more informal way. Games, activities outside the church, small groups, conversations, group building initiatives, concerts, and prayer make up the elements of the Wednesday Night program. There are many leaders involved and participating on both nights with the main goal to build relationships with students. The outcome of Tuesday & Wednesday Nights hopes to be an encouragement in students’ faiths.
Outreach Students in both Jr Hi and Hi League have many opportunities to serve their community and their world. Jr Highers have various outreaches offered monthly, ranging from talking to homeless people downtown to raising money for World Vision (a hunger relief organization). The Hi League have been involved in more committed outreaches at the Hope Center and the Open Door Mission and look to be committed in more areas around the city. They are also offered various one-time outreaches as well.
Events & Trips There are many events and trips planned for both Jr High and Hi League that seek to enrich the lives of our students. Events and Trips are for group bonding, intense spiritual experiences, service for others and this world, reaching out to bring others in, and learning about who God is through exploring the world seldom seen. The outcomes of the events and trips hope to be unity in the youth group, growth in the size of the youth group, and deepening personal commitments to Christ.
Student Leadership Student leadership is open for all Hi League students. Student leaders explore their own leadership abilities and gifts as well as learn about the Biblical understanding of leadership, applying servant principles as demonstrated by Jesus. Student leaders also serve as a sounding board for the Youth Pastor, and give input into the activities and needs of the Hi League. Student Leadership meets on the third Sunday of each month after the 11:00 service for lunch and conversation. The outcome of student leadership hopes to be an empowering and freeing of students’ own leadership abilities.
CHIC (Covenant High in Christ) Click HERE for the official CHIC website For over fifty years, Covenant students have gathered from across the nation for the triennial youth conference of the Covenant—an amazing week where the values of the Covenant are lived out more vibrantly than in any other setting. Through powerful worship, deep discussions, life-changing seminars and wild excursions, students from many different backgrounds come together to see and hear God in a new way. The next CHIC is in July of 2009 at the University of Tennessee
Mission Trips Jr high and Hi League mission trips are planned every other year for Jr High and every three years for Hi League. Mission trips get students out of their daily environment and into relationships with people that they do not naturally gravitate toward. Mission trips also allow students to grow in their understanding of other cultures so that they will not be afraid of them, which leads to more serious problems of hate and racism. They broaden the world view of our students so that our students get out of the trap of being completely focused on themselves. They also help serve people and meet some needs of people in poverty. The outcomes of mission trips hope to be a deepening of personal relationships with Christ, realization of personal ability to help other and serve God, and a surrender to a life of service to God.
